A quirky photo feature each week.

It’s the week of the underdog—or rather, the underfish! The blobfish, once dubbed the world’s ugliest animal,” has been crowned New Zealand’s Fish of the Year.

While it might not win any beauty contests with its gelatinous appearance and droopy features, the blobfish has captured the hearts of New Zealanders.

These deep-sea dwellers live in the waters off New Zealand and Australia, typically at depths where the pressure is immense. Their unique appearance is actually an adaptation to this extreme environment. When pulled out of the water, sudden decompression causes the blobfish to become misshapen.

But their odd appearance didn’t stop the blobfish running away with this years Fish of the Year competition, run by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust. The comp saw a record number of votes this year – 5,583 in 2025, compared with 1,021 last year. The blobfish won with 1,286 votes, beating the orange roughy by 300 votes.

Finding Calm in the Chaos: Mindfulness for Parents

Parenthood: a whirlwind of joy, love, and let's face it, stress! From toddler tantrums to teenage tribulations, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. If you're finding yourself running on empty, mindfulness can be a powerful tool to help you navigate the chaos with greater ease.

What is Mindfulness for Parents?

Parenting often involves a constant stream of distractions, interruptions, and meltdowns (both theirs and ours!). Mindfulness is about learning to navigate this chaos by being present in the moment. It's about paying attention, on purpose, to the present experience without judgment.

5 Mindful Tips and Techniques from the experts

Parenting is a rollercoaster of emotions. Mindfulness can help you manage the ups and downs with greater calm. Here are 5 techniques to help you reset when you feel overwhelmed:

  1. The One Deep Breath Trick:

    • Before reacting, take one deep breath: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds.

    • This signals your nervous system to relax and provides a moment to choose your response.

  2. The "Name It to Tame It" Technique:

    • When emotional, voicing your feelings can help you calm down and shift into problem-solving mode.

    • This strategy also works for children experiencing meltdowns.

  3. The Mindful Pause Before Reacting:

    • If you feel like you're about to snap, pause for 2 seconds before speaking or acting.

    • This pause can be the difference between reacting and responding intentionally.

  4. The Five Senses Reset:

    • When overwhelmed, use your senses to ground yourself in the present moment.

    • Name 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste.

    • This technique is quick and can stop spiraling thoughts.

  5. The "Let It Be Messy" Mantra:

    • Accept the messiness of parenting.

    • Repeat the mantra: "It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be enough."
