What’s black and white and blue all over? A penguin chick with a tiny painted toenail, of course.

Keepers at Blackpool Zoo in the UK have come up with a clever – and super cute – way to tell their new baby penguins apart. With several fluffy Magellanic chicks arriving at Penguin Cove this summer, it quickly became clear that their similar size and markings were making it hard to keep track of who's who. So the team turned to a delightfully creative solution: nail polish.

Yep, in a kind of “penguin pedicure,” one chick from each nest gets a dab of blue varnish on its toe. It’s not about style (though we’d argue they’re totally pulling it off) – it helps the zoo’s keepers accurately record their health, weight, and development as they grow.

Magellanic penguins are native to South America’s coastal Argentina and Chile, and Blackpool Zoo is the only UK facility that houses them. Their Penguin Cove now includes 11 nest boxes and 23 adult penguins – and the chicks are just beginning to peek out into the world.

Soon, the chicks will learn to swim, explore the pool, and eventually get names and ID bands once their gender is confirmed. But for now, we’re loving their fluffy feathers, tiny flippers, and yes, that seriously sweet splash of blue.
