A Space Rock Older Than Earth Crashed Into This Man’s House

On a regular Wednesday in Georgia, something extraordinary dropped in – and left a small hole in the floor. A meteorite, roughly the size of a cherry tomato, fell from space and landed inside a home in McDonough, after punching clean through the roof, insulation, and ceiling.

Scientists at the University of Georgia confirmed the rock is an ordinary chondrite – the most common type of meteorite found on Earth. But here’s the twist: this one formed about 4.56 billion years ago. That makes it older than the Earth itself.

Here’s video of it landing (and the dent it made):

The meteorite, now dubbed the McDonough Meteorite, came from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Researchers believe it likely broke off from a much larger asteroid more than 470 million years ago. And while space rocks do fall to Earth fairly often, it’s age has really got people talking.

The homeowner is reportedly still finding meteorite dust around the house, and scientists are studying fragments to better understand its origins – and what events like this can teach us about protecting the planet from larger space debris.
