The Bulb That Has Been Burning For Over 100 Years

This week, we're shining a (literal) light on the oldest known continuously operating light bulb. The Livermore Centennial Light Bulb has been burning bright for over a century!

Nestled in Fire Station #6 in Livermore, California, this hand-blown carbon-filament bulb has been glowing since 1901, making it the world's longest-lasting light bulb. Originally a 60-watt bulb, it now emits a cozy 4-watt glow, similar to a nightlight.

The bulb's remarkable lifespan is attributed to its rarely being turned off, reducing stress caused by temperature fluctuations. It’s burned for more than a million hours and entered the Guinness Book of Records in 2013.

The bulb has taken on celebrity status, even being celebrated with a centennial birthday bash and its own "Bulbcam" for fans to watch online round the clock.

So next time your bulb burns out and leaves you in the dark, just remember – somewhere in California, there's a light bulb from 1901 still going strong! Maybe it's time we rethink those "disposable" light bulbs, eh?
